The National Edge AI Hub welcomed representatives from the North East and North Cumbria Secure Data Environment (NENC SDE) and Health Innovation North East and North Cumbria to Newcastle University’s Urban Sciences Building on 8 October for a workshop focused on AI, healthcare data, and regional innovation.
The event featured presentations from Prof Raj Ranjan, Dr Varun Ojha, Dr Alan Bagnall, and Dr Seamus O’Neill, following an opening welcome from Dr Tejal Shah. Discussions explored AI safety in healthcare, secure access to health data, opportunities created by linked datasets, and the challenges of fragmented data ecosystems.
Attendees also learned about ongoing research within the Hub, including collaborative work with Freeman Hospital on AI-enabled sarcopenia detection, alongside wider discussions on trustworthy and explainable AI in clinical settings.
The event provided an excellent opportunity to strengthen connections between researchers, NHS partners, and innovation organisations across the region, with discussions continuing over lunch and a tour of the Urban Sciences Building.
