Prof Aldo Rinaldi (Clinical Collaborator), Consultant Cardiologist, King’s College London

Dr Sandra Howell (Clinical Collaborator), Clinical Research Fellow, King’s College London

Prof Yingliang Ma (Academic Collaborator), University of East Anglia

HeartEdgeAI will develop the responsible Edge AI readiness foundation for smart garment-based heart failure monitoring at home. Working with patients, carers and clinicians, the project will define user needs, clinical alert pathways, and appropriate local data processing and sharing. It will address privacy, accessibility and clinical oversight, providing a foundation for future systems that support patients and fit into clinical care without adding unnecessary workload.

Objectives:

  • Define the target use case and patient groups, and how patients, carers, heart failure nurses and cardiologists will interact with the system.
  • Co-design the clinical workflow and alert pathway, covering triage, response times, alert categories, false alarms, missing data and escalation. The aim is to support clinicians without adding workload.
  • Develop a responsible Edge AI architecture for local processing, storage and data sharing, addressing consent, data minimisation, retention, auditability, model drift, cybersecurity, accessibility and human oversight.

Expected Impact: The project will help shape future smart garments around patients’ and carers’ needs at home, while clarifying useful clinical information and alert escalation routes to support existing care pathways.
